Assistance for federal workers in the Tennessee Valley

Many families in our community are affected by the Government shutdown which has moved into its 34th day (January 24th). Many businesses in the area are offering assistance and freebies to furloughed workers. Below are some of the services workers can take advantage of:

Decatur City Schools: The school district announced it would assist with school related expenses like class fees, lunch money, extended day payments, and field trip money. The district's plan is not to waive fees, but defer them and work out a payment arrangement.

Food Bank of North Alabama: Call 256-539-2256 for more info on how the food bank can provide assistance. 

Harlem Globetrotters: The Harlem Globetrotters will be at the Von Braun Center 3pm this Sunday, January 27th. The team is offering complimentary tickets to furlough workers. Contact the VBC box office for more details.

The Heart of the Valley YMCA: Offering financial assistance to Y members who have been furloughed and free admission to non-members who are employed but currently off the job. 

Huntsville Museum of Art: The Museum is offering free admission to furlough workers. They say community members who are employed by the federal government, but are currently furloughed, may visit the Museum Tuesday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. To receive the free admission, guests must show their driver’s license, proof of employment by the federal government and proof of their furlough status to the Guest Services personnel. This offer will be valid for the remainder of the furlough and may only be used during the time frame indicated. It is not valid on weekends, during Museum events or during $5 After 5p Thursdays.

Huntsville Utilities: HSV Utilities is asking customers who may have difficulty paying their bills due to the shutdown to call them at 256-535-1200. They'll work with you to explain your options. 

Redstone Federal Credit Union: Members affected by the government shutdown can take advantage of low interest loans and other benefits. 

Avadian Credit Union: Avadian is offering 0% APR loans to help those affected by the shutdown

Progress Bank: Progress Bank is offering a Furlough Loan to help those affected by the government shutdown. For more info call 1-888-513-2288 or click on Progress Bank.

MOD Pizza: MOD Pizza in Madison is offering FREE pizza on Friday, January 25th to furloughed workers. Stop in and show your government ID to score a FREE MOD size pizza or salad.

Chic-fil-a: The Chic-fil-a on University Drive is offering a 50% discount to furloughed FBI and NASA workers.

Mango's Caribbean Cookhouse: Offering 50% off the buffet price for furloughed employees. The restaurant is located at 1426 Paramount Drive in Huntsville.

New Orleans Lunchbox Restaurant: 50% off to all furloughed employees with proof of ID.

Urban Cookhouse: 50% off meals for all furloughed workers and family members. The restaurant is located at Bridge Street Town Centre.  You will need to provide an ID. 

Beauregard's: Offering free family meals to ATF, FBI, NASA, EPA, and DOJ employess affected by the government shutdown. Family meals include 36 chicken nuggets and four orders of fries. In-person carry out only with a valid ID presented. Order bewteen 3pm to 5pm. Maximum 25 family meals per day.
